Lana del Rio wins the Italian Trotting Derby
Lana del Rio, a 3-year-old filly sired by the great champion trotter Varenne, won the Italian Trotting Derby over the 1-5/16th-mile distance in great manner on Saturday afternoon at Tordivalle in Rome.
She went to post as the even money favorite in the 81st Derby Italiano del Trotto and trainer/driver Santo Mollo had the brown filly up in gear as the gate left the trotters.
Lana del Rio went to the front and was never threatened. Lisa America -- owned by Hall of Famer Lou Guida -- was the second choice in the betting and found a nice place in the garden spot from the start, but with 600 meters to go her driver, Andrea Guzzinatti, opted to take her to the outside of Lana del Rio. Going down the stretch Lisa America faded and finished fourth.
Lana del Rio won easily in 1:58.1f (mile rate), followed one length behind by Light Kronos (sired by S J's Photo), while Libeccio Grif (sired by Andover Hall) just managed to get by Lisa America to finish third.
Lana Del Rio picked up a check of $370,000 for the win. This was her 13th victory from 20 lifetimes starts. She became the first offspring of Varenne to win the prestigious Italian Trotting Derby, which is the richest trotting race in Europe for 3-year-old trotters. Her dam, Urbem d’Asolo, who holds a record of 1:58.2, is sired by the Swedish trotter Ata Star L (he by the French sire Tibur).
